Tenerife Geography
Tenerife is the largest of the seven Canary Islands and has a population of 839,000. Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the capital of the island and is also the second biggest city on the island. Tenerife Transport
Two airports; Tenerife North and Tenerife South serve Tenerife. The only other way to arrive in Tenerife is by ferry (as it is an island) either to Los Cristianos or Santa Cruz de Tenerife. There are two toll-free motorways that cover nearly the entire island linking most of the main resorts and towns. Away form the motorways there is a network of smaller roads that vary from wide, steep roads to winding narrow roads. There is a network of buses on the island that provide public transport and there are also plans for a light rail network. Tenerife History
The natives originally knew the island of Tenerife as Chenech. Legend has it that many islands (Tenerife amongst them) were the uppermost peaks of the lost continent of Atlantis. It is believed that the island of Tenerife was originally 3 separate islands that as a consequence of a volcanic eruption melted together forming the island that we know today. On July 25th 1797 Nelson invaded Tenerife, after a fierce battle the British were defeated and Nelson Lost his right arm as he tried to disembark his ship.
