Paphos is a town located on the south west coast of Cyprus. In ancient times two places were called Paphos: New Paphos and Old Paphos. New Paphos is currently the inhabited town. The town of Paphos was the birthplace of Aphrodite the Greek goddess of love, beauty, and sexual intercourse. Paphos in Greco Roman times was actually the capital of Cyprus and is well known for the Roman Governor's Palace remains.
Paphos has a population of just over 47,000 people and is a fast growing tourist resort, with a lovely fishing harbour. The Castle of Paphos, which is situated at the towns harbour, was originally built to protect the harbour. It was rebuilt in the thirteenth century by the Lusignans and was then dismantled by the Venetians in 1570 who were unable to defend it form attacks from the Ottomans. They in turn rebuilt the castle after they captured the island.
From Paphos's picturesque harbour, to the modern town centre and coastline there are many ancient sites to visit. Located underground are the tombs of the Kings, these date back to the 4th century BC. There are numerous museums impressive museums to visit in Paphos including the Byzantium museum, the Ethnographical museum and the Archaeological museum. On the western coast you will find the Akamas Peninsula, this is one of the few remaining unspoiled areas on the Cypriot coast.
