General Information about Malta

Malta became a republic in 1974 with the last of the British forces leaving the country in the hands of the president Sir Anthony Mamo 5 years later. 2003 saw Malta's voters apply to be members of the European Union through the referendum, a request that was granted a year later.
150 years of control by the British has left its religious mark on Malta who prize their religion to the point where half of the year is devoted to celebrating Saints. Feasts are regularly practised throughout the summer period and it is not uncommon to see the celebrations taking place in towns and cities across the island.
Whilst the British left their mark through religion, the traditional cuisine of Malta took roots from Sicilian influences whilst the currency is the Lira.
