General Information about Mallorca
Mallorca is Spain's largest island and is one of the Balearic Islands and is also known as Majorca. Like the other Balearic Islands it is a popular destination for tourists. Catalan and Spanish are the main languages of Mallorca. The island has some very famous residents including Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas. Mallorca Geography
Mallorca's capital is Palma and has a population of around 750,000. It has two mountainous regions both around 70 km in length, these occupy the north western and eastern areas if the Island. Mallorca has two main bays; these are situated on the northeast coast. The weather and climate is typically Mediterranean although snow is not unheard of in the winter in certain parts of the island.
Mallorca History
Since Ancient times Majorca has been inhabited. Locals have discovered signs of habitation and burial chambers from the Palaeolithic Period. The capital (Palma) was founded as a Roman camp on the remains of an ancient Talaiotic settlement. Palma's history then saw it part of numerous Vandal sacking during the demise of the Roman Empire. The Byzantine then conquered it, it was then colonised and was finally established by James I. Palma was adopted in 1983 as the capital of the Balearic Islands.

Majorca Tourism
Since the 1950's mass tourism changed the face of the Mallorca, changing it into a main attraction for tourists and also it attracted workers from the Spainish mainland. This massive increase in tourism caused Mallorca's capital Palma to grow significantly. In the year 1960 Mallorca had 500,000 visitors, this grew to a huge 20,700,000 visitors in 2001.
Mallorca Culture
A long time before it became well known, visitors to the island had a fascination with Mallorca's Monuments, Art Galleries and Buildings. During the winter the island is enriched by a season of opera. Meanwhile, during the summer months there are Jazz, Classical and Ballet to be enjoyed in the open-air theatres. There are numerous fiestas in Mallorca, and in every town there is a popular celebration annually.
Majorca Religion
The most extended religion in Mallorca is Roman Catholic (as the Spanish Mainland) but there is freedom of worship. The Breakdown of religion is as follows - 90% are Catholic, 8% are Muslim and 2% are Jewish.
