Car Hire Birmingham

Car Hire UK » Car Hire Birmingham

Birmingham is a city in England's west midlands, it is England's largest core city and many consider it to be the UK's second city, after of course London. Birmingham has a population of just over 12 million people. People who come from Birmingham are referred to as brummies; this term comes from the cities name being brum. During Britain's industrial revolution Birmingham gained a reputation of being a powerhouse, this led to the city being referred to as the city of a thousand trades or the workshop of the world. Birmingham has a climate which is quite temperate, with highs in the summer months of around 20 degrees and in the winter around 4.5 degrees. Although the climate is not known for being extreme the city has experienced a few tornados, the last of these being in 2005.

Even though Birmingham became famous as a centre for Engineering and manufacturing it is the service sector that now dominates its economy. Of Britain's big four banks two of them were founded in Birmingham, Midland Bank (HSBC) and Lloyds bank (Lloyds TSB). The banking, insurance and finance sector has over a hundred thousand employees in the city. An increasingly important area of the cities economy is tourism, with facilities such as the National Exhibition Centre and the international convention centre the city of Birmingham is accountable for 42% of the UK's exhibition and conference trade.

Within Birmingham there is over 8 thousand acres of parkland, the largest park being Sutton Park, which covers 2400 acres thus making it Europe's largest urban nature reserve. In recent years two areas of the city have gone through major regeneration. Bindleyplace, which is a large canal side area, was developed with office buildings and restaurants and the national sea life centre. The other area that has seen major development is the bullring shopping centre, this now features numerous designer shops combined with apartments and offices. Birmingham is also home to the national indoor arena, this is one of Europe's busiest large-scale entertainment sporting venues.

There are many further attractions in the surrounding countryside of Birmingham such as River-upon-Avon which was the birthplace of William Shakespeare. Since the city can get fairly congested this would be an ideal choice to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city for a few hours, making Car Hire Birmingham the perfect choice. Due mainly to Birmingham's central location the city is a major hub for the canal, rail and motorway networks. Birmingham is served by numerous major motorways and is home to the UK's most famous motorway junction, spaghetti junction. The city is served by Birmingham international airport, this airport is the sixth largest in the UK and behind London Heathrow has the highest percentage of business traffic. Birmingham has two major railway stations, both located in the city centre, Birmingham new street and Birmingham snow hill. Both these stations are connected to the UK's national rail network. Birmingham local public transport is either by tram, bus, or local train. Despite the public transport in being very reliable still the best way to get around is by car which makes car ideal for visitors to the city.
