Car Hire Balearic Islands

Car Hire Spain ยป Car Hire Balearic Islands

Balearic Islands Geography

The Balearic Islands are a large group of islands that lie in the western Mediterranean Sea. The Balearic Islands are: Menorca, Mallorca/Majorca, Cabrera, Ibiza and Formenlera. The Balearic's are a province of Spain, and their capital city is Palma de Mallorca. The population of the islands is just over 1 million people and Spanish is the official language although another readily spoken language is Catalan. As all of the islands are quite small in size car hire is a great way to ensure that you can get the most out of your trip to any of the islands. Auto Reservation Plus can offer you Car Hire Majorca, Car Hire Menorca, Car Hire Mallorca and Car Hire Ibiza at great rates.

Balearic Islands History

There are many legends regarding the history of the islands despite there being very little history on the earliest inhabitants. There is a tale that the Balearic Islands were colonised after the Trojan War by Rhodes. The population of the islands were very mixed and it is believed that they had some very strange habits including being naked or dressed only in sheepskins. Following the decline of the Roman Empire, the Balearic Islands were conquered by the Vandals, then the Byzantines and finally by the Moors following their conquest of Iberia. For most of the Eighteenth century as a result of the Treaty of Utrecht, the island of Minorca was a British dependency. In 1802 during the French Revolution it was finally ceded permanently to Spain by the Treaty of Amiens.

Balearic Islands Tourism

With its wonderful beaches, excellent climate and a rich culture the Balearic Islands are one of the most popular holiday destinations in Spain. More passengers pass through the Palma de Mallorca Airport than any other airport in Spain. Many people who have visited the islands have gone on to make them their homes. During the 1960's Ibiza became a major tourist destination for what was then a famous hippie culture, it was also famous for its nudist beaches. Ibiza is now more renowned for it's nightlife in San Antonio, but it also has plenty to offer others who want a quieter holiday. Menorca is the more historical of the Balearic Islands, it was known by the Romans as the minor island. There are several beaches and some secluded bays to be discovered, it is an ideal location for people who want a truly relaxing holiday.
