Austrian Geography

Officially known as the Republic of Austria it is situated in Central Europe. Austria borders with Germany, Italy, Hungary, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Austria's capital is Vienna, which is also the countries largest city with a population of about 2 million people. The estimated population of Austria is 8.2 million people, which makes it the 92nd largest country in the world. Austria has a cool / temperate climate with predominantly humid westerly winds. Austrian History

The central European area that is now Austria was settled in prehistoric times and was occupied by Celtic tribes in pre-Roman times. Slavs, Avars and Bavarians invaded Austria after the fall of the Roman Empire. The first record of the name Austria is in 996 where it was written as Ostarrichi. Austria was split into occupation zones after World War II by the US, the Soviet Union and Britain. It regained its independence on 15th May 1955. In 1995 Austria became a member of the European Union but retained its neutrality.

Austrian Religion

Roman Catholic Christianity is the most popular religion in Austria with around 68.5% of the country following it. 4.7% of the population are Protestant, 4.2% are Muslim and around 17.1% say they follow no religion. Austria used to have a large Jewish population; this has now been reduced to just a few thousand people due to the 1938 mass emigration and also due to the Holocaust whilst under the Nazi regime. The number of Muslims has increased in recent years due to immigration, mainly from Yugoslavia and Turkey.
